An dem Fall ist ein bitterer Diskurs um die Möglichkeiten der Bewerbung von Abtreibungen entbrannt. Hittman geht das Thema allerdings nicht von gesellschaftlicher Seite her an, sondern von einem persönlichen Schicksal. Ihr Kino ist das der Menschen. Das gilt für » Never Rarely Sometimes Always « mehr denn je. Der Film folgt der 17-jährigen Autumn und ihrer Cousine Skylar bei einer intimen Odyssee durch New York. Die beiden Frauen, fantastisch gespielt von den Newcomerinnen Sidney Flanigan und Talia Ryder, sind aus dem ländlichen Pennsylvania in die Metropole gekommen, weil die ungewollt schwangere Autumn abtreiben will. Wie schon in » Beach Rats «, arbeitete Hittman wieder mit der großartigen Hélène Louvart zusammen. Die französische Kamerafrau braucht keine Beauty Shots oder sonstige visuelle Spielereien. Ihre Bilder sind suchende, sie sind unaufdringlich und sensibel, changieren mühelos zwischen Naturalismus und zutiefst filmischen Momenten. Autumn wird immer wieder leinwandfüllend herangeholt, ihr Gesicht mit geringer Tiefenschärfe aus der Umgebung herausgeschält. Dadurch können wir lesen: vom Schmerz der Frau, der etwas widerfahren ist, von ihrer Gewissheit, bei der Entscheidung zu bleiben. Die Hintergründe der Schwangerschaft bleiben im Vagen. Der Film braucht wenige Worte. Die Verbindung der beiden Frauen ist ab dem Zeitpunkt klar, ab dem Skylar Bescheid weiß. Ein schweigendes Einvernehmen. Und so folgen wir ihnen durch die Straßen der Großstadt, vorbei an Abtreibungsgegnern, hinein in die Praxen mit den Apparaturen und den Menschen, die tagtäglich mit Schwangerschaftsabbrüchen zu tun haben. Der Filmtitel bezieht sich auf einen Fragenkatalog, der vor dem Eingriff abgehandelt wird. Auf Fragen wie »Waren sie schon einmal sexueller Gewalt ausgesetzt? « gilt es dann zu Antworten: Niemals, selten, manchmal, immer. Der Moment, in dem Autumn diese Fragen gestellt bekommt, gehört zu den emotionalsten im Film. »Sogar eine kleine Berührung kann verletzen. Ich wollte die Zuschauer mit Bildern in die Situation der Frauen versetzten« erklärte Hittman bei der Pressekonferenz. Im Film tätschelt einmal ein fremder Mann wie selbstverständlich eine Schulter. Hittman braucht nicht mehr als dieses Bild um zu sagen: eine Grenze wurde überschritten. Ob man Hittman jetzt als die »feministische Filmemacherin« feiern sollte, ist eigentlich nebensächlich. Ihre Kunst, dieser Film, spricht für sich: Niemand hat sich bisher dem Thema Abtreibung auf derart ehrliche, harte, rührende und vielschichtige Art und Weise genähert.
I'm so excited for this movie. Naw I still think its astonishing that such little kids would go to the beach alone. Its the beach for gods sake, drowning, sunburn etc. everyone says how it was what we all did back in the 60s but I was born in the 60s and theres no way my mum would have let me take my little brother of 4 on the bus to the friggin public beach to swim alone. Sorry, it may have been an innocent time but that was still a risky move, it just was. Omg, the Mario & Luigi's Partners in time music was such a throwback <3 <3.

This trailer really hit home for me. Ive seen a number of friends and family who are teen parents and Ive witnessed their struggles to make amends with their decisions, whether it was to keep the baby or to abort. Society tells them theyre low-life idiots for getting pregnant young, society calls them irresponsible when they struggle to provide for a kid they werent ready to have, society calls them murderers when they terminate the pregnancy all together because even with the governments intervention, they still cant afford to sacrifice the amount of time and money it will take to just keep a roof over the kids head. This is a problem a lot of youths, especially young ladies, are faced with today, this scrutiny from all ends. You cant please society, no matter what choice you make. That is why young ladies should always preserve the right to make the choice that is best for them and their situation, not what is best for someone elses peace of mind.
